Maronês Cattle Route “Discovering the Landscapes and Pastoral Activities of Alvadia”

On 4 October, LIFE Maronesa, in collaboration with its CLIMA+ partner Pé na Terra – Percursos Pedestres, launched its second tourist activity in the Alvadia common land.
The walk was attended by six people who were guided by the tour organiser, Fernando Gomes, and all were accompanied by the project’s Maronês breeder, Avelino Rego.
The meeting point was in Alvadia, in the church square, and the group quickly set off eastwards along the common land road towards Lamas.
The group had the opportunity to learn a little more about the pastoral landscape that is currently threatened by fire in the summer, after this being the second consecutive year that flames have entered the village, consuming the most productive lands. Participants were able to learn how to identify certain indicators, such as plant species and soil characteristics, related to the ecological processes of this village, located on the Serra do Alvão plateau.
After successfully completing the entire route of the mountain, upon arrival at Lamas, the breeder Avelino Rego opened the doors of his farm for a quick visit. Waiting for them were the calves, who were awaiting the arrival of their mothers, who had gone for their daily walk in the common land. Avelino spoke a little about the daily and annual management of his herd and answered relevant questions from the keen participants.
After visiting the farm, the group returned to Alvadia along a trail that burned in August this year, overlooking the village of Favais. Upon arriving in Alvadia, they headed to Tasca do Póio for a well-deserved meal, toasted with CLIMA+ Maronesa beef and a magnificent view over the River Póio.
