Participation in Alto Minho FIRECAMP

LIFE Maronesa, through its scientific coordinator Carlos Aguiar, attended the 6th edition of Alto Minho FIRECAMP in Ponte de Lima on 30 and 31 January. The biennial event is aimed at public administration officials, forestry technicians, municipal technicians, civil protection agents and technicians, firefighters and other forest firefighting operatives.

Our team member took the presentation ‘Practical research into grazing and the use of fire’ to the Rio Lima Auditorium. The presentation focused on demonstrating the changes that have occurred in the landscape, mainly soil and vegetation, over time in the mountains of the north of the country, as a result of changes in the fire regime and pattern, from a historical perspective and analysis. The conclusions were reached through several years of research, data collection and verifiable experience of the current fire regime and pattern. As a proposal to find an existing balance in mountain ecosystems, the good practices of modernising extensive livestock farms and the results of the LIFE Maronesa project were presented as a possible and simple solution to restore fertility, retention and carbon assimilation on marginal lands in the north of the country that urgently need more herbivores.

The Alto Minho FIRECAMP event was organised by the CIM Alto Minho as part of the project ATEMPO – Asistencia Transfronteriza de Emergencias, financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the INTERREG VI A Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2021-2027.
