On 2 July, as part of Action C5 of the project – Replication and Transfer, the LIFE Maronesa team was delighted to welcome the breeders of the Jales AIGP to the Casal da Bouça farm for a practical workshop on sharing best practices from the project’s breeders.
It was a pleasant morning in Soutelinho, where the breeders of Maronês cattle and Serrana and Bravia goats from the Jales Plateau had the opportunity to tour and test all the infrastructure and private areas of the Casal da Bouça farm, from the hay meadow areas to the pastures where the cattle manegement handling system is located, the calf and adult feeders in each of the handling parks planned by the farm. The management of the herd and the logistics of the farm were the main topics discussed through questions raised by the farmers and conversations with Tommy, the breeder of LIFE Maronesa.
The work of mineral soil correction in the hay meadows, in order to increase forage production, also attracted special attention from the farmers during this workshop.
Efficient livestock management and logistics enable farmers to increase their productivity, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their farm and grazing land management, as well as creating new ways to diversify their income in areas other than livestock production. This increase in labour productivity consequently allows farmers to increase their livestock size, provided that it is backed up by an equal increase in forage productivity for winter supplementation.
